Make Life Easier: Tips and How-To’s

Automate your reminders

Set a reminder on your phone or scribble it down in your planner! The default Reminders app on iPhone is great, but there are others out there which serve the same purpose.

Ask forgiveness, not permission

Have a great new idea, but not sure how others will react? Just do it. Sure, they might criticize you or your idea, but that’s better than not knowing. You might be on to something!

Go digital

A lot can be gained from utilizing the technological resources we have today. Google Calendars is a great way to keep everyone on the same page while also having instant access at your fingertips. Bypass a meeting by having a Skype Call, and upload the document to OneDrive for live editing in the Cloud.

Have a good support group

Your peers don’t want to tell you that you’re wrong. Find friends who will, but who can do so without making you feel like a piece of garbage. Have someone who can help you turn over your ideas and pick out the flaws so that you can plan accordingly.

Find a mentor

Whether we like to admit it or not, we all need a little help sometimes. Find someone who has been in your shoes, who can show you the steps they took in a similar situation.

Find someone to mentor

Having someone to mentor might sound like a burden, but it can actually be quite helpful! If someone is interested in doing the same things as you, they are easier to delegate smaller tasks to. This is also good for organizations with high turnover – my fraternity for example, where new positions are chosen every year and member turnover is every 4 years, because it teaches newer members how to run that positions when you’re gone.

Everything takes two to three times longer than you expect

The drive to work, the project that isn’t due for another month… Whatever you think you can afford to put off, do it now or regret it later!

Don’t assume, verify

Assuming that someone else is handling it can lead to huge shortcomings. When someone makes a suggestion, for example, to form a committee to discuss something, and it is agreed upon; make sure that the said committee is actually formed. Likewise, don’t wait until the week before a big event to ask “how is this coming?” Make sure someone is on it!

Understand that you can’t be perfect

This is hard for some people to admit. One of my favorite quotes is by Aristotle: “There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing.”

Make me-time; time for yourself

This could be time to relax, or time just to do whatever makes you happy. I sit, writing this article in my me-time because it’s something that I enjoy. Other days, I might hike, or kayak in my free time. What you do is up to you, as long as you are taking time to do what makes you happy
